“The Herbal Female Complex consists of 7 different herbs balanced for women. The composition of the food supplement is supplemented with True Blush (Vitex agnus-castus).
Shatavari – Shatavari is actually a type of asparagus native to India and the Himalayas. Traditionally used as an adaptogen for women. It contains naturally high levels of isoflavones, the well-known phytoestrogens found in soya products. It is used in Ayurvedic medicine as a remedy for cramps, menstrual cramps, and is also considered to be a uterine tonic, helping to regulate the function of the uterus during the various stages of the menstrual cycle. In this context, it is often referred to as a uterine sedative, as its ability to reduce excessive spasmodic activity of the uterine wall has been confirmed in numerous studies.
Oats – Oats have been used for centuries as a restorative medicine. They have been particularly useful for people suffering from nervous disorders, especially nervous exhaustion. One of the most important effects of oats is on cholesterol. A problem faced by post-menopausal women is the increase in LDL cholesterol as estrogen levels fall. Oats contain a compound called beta-glucan, a type of soluble fibre. It has been shown in several clinical trials to bind to LDL cholesterol, removing it from the body through the intestines.
Basil, known as “tulsi” in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, is a well-known anti-inflammatory agent that acts as a natural COX-2 inhibitor. It is also highly valued as an adaptogen, helping to reduce the physiological effects of stress, such as prolonged increases in cortisol levels. In this context, basil is an excellent mood stabiliser and stress reliever.
True Purgatory – the main mechanism of action of true Purgatory is the effect of improving the development of the corpus luteum (thus correcting the relative lack of progesterone) through pituitary action. Purgatory has a strong effect on the function of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, helping to normalise other hormones and reducing both the prolactin and estrogen-progesterone ratio.
Sage is another herb traditionally used to improve women’s health. Sage is a well-known antispasmodic, inhibiting the serotonin- and acetylcholine-dependent contractions of the tissues, suggesting that it can be used to alleviate menstrual dysfunction. It has often been used as a remedy for the hot flushes associated with menopause. There are centuries of empirical data supporting its use for this purpose, but there is very little clinical evidence.
Fennel – virtually every culture on Earth has used fennel in herbal healing practices. It is most commonly used as a digestive tonic to relieve bloating and cramps in digestion. However, it has recently been found that fennel seeds contain high levels of phytoestrogens, which can bind to estrogen receptors, reducing some of the symptom patterns associated with declining levels of estrogen. Compounds in fennel are also known to improve liver function, which may influence the recycling of oestrogens. Fennel seeds have also traditionally been used to stimulate breast milk production.
Known contraindications: sage leaves should be avoided during pregnancy.
Artichoke – used for decades in the British Isles as an herbal medicine. It has long been valued as a liver herb and is included in many detoxification products and as an ingredient in detox diets. Artichoke is justifiably highly valued for the control of elevated LDL cholesterol. The active substances in artichoke, caffeoylquinic acids, have been shown to significantly reduce cholesterol biosynthesis.
Possible uses – menopausal symptoms – hot flushes, estrogen deficiency.
Elevated cholesterol – a decrease in cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver. Mood improvement/stress reduction.
